Dec. 21 new books

Author: Gargano, Elizabeth
Title: Reading Victorian schoolrooms : childhood and education in nineteenth-century fiction / Elizabeth Gargano
Published: New York : Routledge, c2008

Dana Peterman comments: A neat way to place concepts of childhood and education in historical context. Though this is about fictional representations in the 19th century, there is much be gained from examining these impressions of the era.

uthor: Meier, Terri
Title: Black communications and learning to read : building on children’s linguistic and cultural strengths / Terri Meier
Published: New York : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, c2008

—–

Title: Music education and digital technology / edited by John Finney and Pamela Burnard
Published: New York : Continuum, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: This has a more international perspective. What caught my eye in this book was a chapter on cell phones and others on collaboration in an online environment.

Author: Gunzelmann, Betsy, 1952-
Title: Hidden dangers : subtle signs of failing schools / Betsy Gunzelmann
Published: Lanham, Md. : Rowman & Littlefield Education, 2008

Dana Peterman comments: More of a prescriptive essay with references. The author has written more evaluative articles than research ones in the field of education. Her background is as a practitioner (though not a recent one) which gives weight to her stance.

Title: Future of the American public research university / edited by Robert [i.e. Roger] L. Geiger, Carol L. Colbeck, Roger L. Williams, and Christian K. Anderson
Published: Rotterdam : Sense Publishers, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: The chapters in this book resulted from a symposium held at Pennsylvania State University. A couple of the editors have written in this area, Geiger has done so extensively. The authors have prominent positions in higher education organizations and are well placed to make some thoughtful commentary on the future of research universities.

Author: Konstam, Varda
Title: Emerging and young adulthood : multiple perspectives, diverse narratives / Varda Konstam
Published: New York, NY : Springer, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: This covers the development of “emerging adults” in their 20s and beyond. Konstam does not try to make over generalizations about the people whom she has interviewed, but you can get a nice snapshot of impressions from this book. I think that this would be good reading for those teaching in higher education, graduate students who want to see a little of themselves represented in research literature, and for those interested in a more academic and clinical look at this age group.

Author: Jha, Jyotsna
Title: Boys’ underachievement in education : an exploration in selected Commonwealth countries / by Jyotsna Jha and Fatimah Kelleher
Published: London : Commonwealth Secretariat and the Commonwealth of Learning, 2006

Dana Peterman comments: International case studies. If only for the scope of the work, this is worthy of some attention.

Title: Working partnerships in higher education, industry and innovation : creating knowledge networks / edited by Glenda Kruss
Published: Cape Town : HSRC, 2006

Dana Peterman comments: Partnerships between industry and higher education have been in vogue for a while. This research monograph from South Africa’s Human Science’s Research Council contains case studies that might be of interest to some in the United States interested in similar programs.

Title: Emotions in learning / edited by Francisco Pons … [et al.]
Published: [Aalborg, Denmark] : Aalborg Universitetsforlag, 2005

Dana Peterman comments: We already know that emotions have a powerful impact on learning, this international perspective gives some research based ideas to understand how one might leverage that knowledge. While this isn’t a “how to” book, it does suggest some ideas that might be put to the test.

Author: Dillman, Don A., 1941-
Title: Mail and internet surveys : the tailored design method / Don A. Dillman
Published: Hoboken, N.J. : Wiley, c2007
Edition: 2nd ed., 2007 update with new internet, visual, and mixed-mode guide

Dana Peterman comments: An updated version for researchers who will increasingly rely on this method. This is a “must consult” book before beginning a venture of this type. Not something to take out of the library so much as a reference book.

Author: Semrud-Clikeman, Margaret
Title: Social competence in children / Margaret Semrud-Clikeman
Published: New York, NY : Springer, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: A casebook method is used to describe social competence. Written by an author with significant amounts of research experience. Look at it.

Title: Neoliberalism and education reform / edited by E. Wayne Ross, Rich Gibson
Published: Cresskill, N.J. : Hampton Press, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: This book combines theory, politics, research and history in a discussion of education and contains chapters by a UCI author as well. Other authors in this book are fairly well known. You should be familiar with at least some of this work.

Author: Evans, Ronald W
Title: This happened in America : Harold Rugg and the censure of social studies / by Ronald W. Evans
Published: Charlotte, N.C. : Information Age Pub., c2007

Dana Peterman comments: Historical pleasure reading for educators. You might view this as a cautionary tale, you might not.

Title: How stakeholders can support teacher quality / edited by Lewis C. Solmon, Kimberly Firetag Agam, Citadelle Priagula
Published: Charlotte, N.C. : IAP, c2007

——

Title: Cross-cultural studies in curriculum : eastern thought, educational insights / edited by Claudia Eppert, Hongyu Wang
Published: New York : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, c2008

Dana Peterman comments: I don’t often see this kind of book. This has an unusual set of thought provoking essays on education from an Eastern point of view.

Dec. 20 New books shelf

Title: Intuition in judgment and decision making / edited by Henning Plessner, Cornelia Betsch, Tilmann Betsch
Published: New York : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, c2008

Dana Peterman comments: This is based on a 2004 conference. Take a look at chapter 6, On the Learning of Intuition by Robin M. Hogarth, chapter 12, From Intuition to Analysis: Making Decisions with Your Head, Your Heart, or by the Book by Weber and Lindemann, and chapter 15, The Benefits of Intuition by Plessner and Czenna among others. Some of these concepts are quite intriguing and I find myself wondering what educators could make of them.

Author: Collins, H. M. (Harry M.), 1943-
Title: Rethinking expertise / Harry Collins and Robert Evans
Published: Chicago : University of Chicago Press, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: So, how do the concepts treated in this book lend themselves to teaching others about science and how to think about science? Take a quick look at the last chapter and see what you might think of.

Title: Language in the media : representations, identities, ideologies / edited by Sally Johnson and Astrid Ensslin
Published: London ; New York : Continuum, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: In particular, for those interested in language, cultural, and technical issues, see Part III, called Contact and Codeswitching in Multilingual Mediascapes and especially Part IV, called Youth, Gender and Cyber-Identities. This is a bit theoretical in parts, but it does give rise to questions educators must address concretely at some point.

Author: McGahan, Christopher
Title: Racing cyberculture : minoritarian art and cultural politics on the Internet / Christopher L. McGahan
Published: New York : Routledge, c2008

Dana Peterman comments: I thought that this book might be of interest because it addresses racial issues in ways which are seldom addressed in K-12 or higher education, through a particular medium of a medium (this comment will make a lot more sense if you look at the book).

Nov. 19 new books shelf

Author: McCaffrey, Daniel F
Title: Value-added assessment in practice : lessons from the Pennsylvania Value-Added Assessment System pilot project / Daniel F. McCaffrey, Laura S. Hamilton
Published: Santa Monica, CA : RAND Corporation, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: This Rand report should be useful for those who would like to take a look at how quantitative data may be analyzed in education. Rand is fairly well known for its reports in education, as well as other fields.

Title: Reading comprehension strategies : theories, interventions, and technologies / edited by Danielle S. McNamara
Published: New York : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: A useful text for those introducing themselves to this topic. The references to each chapter will be of particular value.

Author: Howe, Neil
Title: Millennials go to college : strategies for a new generation on campus : recruiting and admissions, campus life, and the classroom / by Neil Howe & William Strauss
Published: [Great Falls, Va.] : LifeCourse Associates, c2007
Edition: 2nd. ed

Dana Peterman comments: This contains the kind of information, whether you agree with the methods used to collect it or not, that students of higher education might like to see. Taken together with more usual surveys like those produced by HERI (Higher Education Research Institute), you might find an interesting portrait of today’s students upon which to comment.

Title: Cognitive development : critical concepts in psychology / edited by Usha Goswami
Published: London ; New York : Routledge, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: This 3 volume set is more of a handbook. Another useful entry into the research on the topic.

Nov. 14 new books shelf

Title: Practice in a second language : perspectives from applied linguistics and cognitive psychology / edited by Robert M. DeKeyser
Published: Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: Useful for second language researchers, teachers of second languages, and for those trying to understand LLP. Take as look at how language acquisition plays itself out in the classroom in addition to other venues. This is somewhat interdisciplinary book, but it is based in cognitive psychology, as the title would imply.

Author: British Association for Applied Linguistics. Meeting (38th : 2005 : University of Bristol)
Title: Language, culture and identity in applied linguistics : selected papers from the Annual Meeting of the British Association for Applied Linguistics, University of Bristol, September 2005 / edited by Richard Kiely … [et al.]
Published: London ; Oakville, CT : British Association for Applied Linguistics in association with Equinox, 2006

Getting more from a series

Sometimes a title doesn’t say a whole lot when you find it in a library catalog. You can’t tell what’s in an issue or what a piece of literature is really about until you see it . . . but do you really have to physically handle a magazine/journal/periodical/serial?

In case you didn’t already know, there are many series that have individual titles and themes. Typically, there are called monographic series. In a number of library catalogs, including our own Antpac, we only list the title of the series and NOT the title of each issue. One case in point that would be of interest to those studying higher education is the recent release of New Directions for Higher Education’s issue number 138 (aka Summer 2007) titled Access to Higher Education Through Consortia. There are other monographic series of similar types that might be of interest to you. Unfortunately, the best way to locate thematic issues is by searching databases that index them.

Use:

ERIC

Education Full Text

and others.

Once you have found an article of great interest online . . .

Look (or browse) at the other articles in the same issue of that series/journal to trace a potential theme.

So . . .

Be sure to check if that journal, series, and other periodically issued publication has related information.

Title: The role of technology in CSCL : studies in technology enhanced collaborative learning / H. Ulrich Hoppe, H. Ogata, A. Soller (editors)
Published: New York : Springer, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: Based on an international workshop on New Technologies for Collaborative Learning in Japan, this has the kind of content that is sometimes difficult to find from looking at databases, such as ERIC and Education Full Text.

Title: Education and reform in China / edited by Emily Hannum and Albert Park
Published: London ; New York : Routledge, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: Useful for a historical and political background of education in China. Less detail than you might want about this topic over a long term research project.

Author: Berry, Amanda
Title: Tensions in teaching about teaching : understanding practice as a teacher educator / by Amanda Berry
Published: Dordrecht : Springer, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: Some of you have indicated an interest in studying teachers and teacher education. This book spells out some methodologies you might employ. Of particular interest is the chapter on valuing and reconstructing experience.

Title: Youth violence and delinquency : monsters and myths / edited by Marilyn D. McShane and Frank P. Williams III
Published: Westport, Conn. : Praeger, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: This three volume set contains useful background information and references. This is where you might start to explore the issue of development and violence among juveniles. Each volume stands on its own, meaning that books are thematic and that the indexes refer only to the volume in hand (a bit of a weakness in my view for a reference book).

Author: Klass, Ric
Title: Man overboard : confessions of a novice math teacher in the Bronx / Ric Klass
Published: Santa Ana, Calif. : Seven Locks Press, c2006

Dana Peterman comments: This is one fun read. This book has been reviewed by The New York Sun and TeachersCount.org.

Background on Nov. 14 Speaker, Jonathan Alexandar at Education Symposium

As you know,  Jonathan Alexandar, UC Irvine Campus Writing Coordinator, will be speaking from 12 to 12:50pm at the Education Symposium on Wednesday, November 14 in Berkeley Place, room 1111. To give you a little background on this speaker, I thought that I would include titles from his work that I could locate using standard databases in addition to the profile that he has listed under the Faculty Profile System.

Nov. 5 new books shelf

Title: Disparities in school readiness : how families contribute to transitions into school / edited by Alan Booth, Ann C. Crouter
Published: New York : Lawrence Erlbaum, c2008

Dana Peterman comments: Interdisciplinary and based on a number of data, including that from NICHD and NCES (note that Dr. Mahoney has a coauthored paper in chapter 13).

Title: What is authentic educational reform? : pushing against the compassionate conservative agenda / edited by Helen L. Johnson, Arthur Salz
Published: New York : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, c2008

Dana Peterman comments: Critiques NCLB. A number of the contributers come from Queens College. Looks at policies and practices, teaching and learning, and contains prescriptives for action.

Author: Robinson, Keith D
Title: Achievement inequality across K-12 schooling / Keith D. Robinson
Published: 2006

Dana Peterman comments: Dissertation from the University of Michigan with an emphasis on reading and math across K-12. Quantitative in nature. Focuses on disparities between African American and white students.

Author: Stevens, Mitchell L
Title: Creating a class : college admissions and the education of elites / Mitchell L. Stevens
Published: Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: An easy read of material that I found engaging for the most part. The end notes are fairly informative for those looking for further reading.

Author: Greenberg, Daniel S., 1931-
Title: Science for sale : the perils, rewards, and delusions of campus capitalism / Daniel S. Greenberg
Published: Chicago : University of Chicago Press, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: Greenberg has written quite a bit in the field of education. He makes some interesting points that you might find of great interest. You might be interested in some books by Roger L. Geiger and Hugh Davis Graham in addition to this one.

Title: To educate a nation : federal and national strategies of school reform / edited by Carl F. Kaestle and Alyssa E. Lodewick ; foreword by Jeffrey R. Henig
Published: Lawrence, Kan. : University Press of Kansas, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: This is edited by Carl F. Kasestle, who wrote a wonderful book contextualizing the meaning of literacy in the United States, and contains a foreword by Jeffrey R. Henig, who writes on reform and policy. A potentially good bet for those interested in K-12 policy in education at the national level.

Background Information on Speaker Matthew R. Peterson

Yesterday (October 31, 2007) , Matthew R. Peterson from Santa Ana’s MIND Institute gave a talk at UCI’s Department of Education Symposium on a program designed to help children in K-5 learn mathematics visually. To give a little background of his research, I conducted searches of ERIC, PsycINFO and Dissertations & theses: A & I , and Web of Science. Here is a list of the published research that I located that can clearly be traced to him. If you know of others that I have missed, please let me know:

Oct. 26 new books shelf

Title: The missing links : formation and decay of economic networks / James E. Rauch, editor
Published: New York : Russell Sage Foundation, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: This does have relevance to education. Take a look at the following two chapters to see how this book be used in leadership or in new ways to think of research: “The Formation of Inter-Organizational Networks” by Toby E. Stuart and, “On Firmer Ground: The Collaborative Team as Strategic Research Site for Verifying Network-Based Social-Capital Hypotheses” by Ray E. Reagans, Ezra Zukerman, and Bill McEvily. I was also interested in the introductory chapter by Yale’s dean of the School Of Management and James E. Rauch’s, “On the Formation and Decay of Interdisciplinary Boundaries.” There’s much to read here.

Author: Bessant, J. R
Title: Innovation and entrepreneurship / John Bessant, Joe Tidd
Published: Chichester, England ; Hoboken, NJ : John Wiley & Sons, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: More of a textbook on the process of innovation. You will find this useful for leadership and teamwork. You might also view this as an object of trend analysis since we know that business strategies eventually make it into the field of education.

Title: The Cambridge handbook of consciousness / edited by Philip David Zelazo, Morris Moscovitch, Evan Thompson
Published: Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: Great starting place for those of you interested in cognition, development, and language. Particularly useful for its references. For those of you who do not know, Cambridge University Press has been well respected for quite some time (that’s not a promise of future greatness, though).

Author: Carroll, David W., 1950-
Title: Psychology of language / David W. Carroll
Published: Australia ; Belmont, CA : Thomson/Wadsworth, c2008
Edition: 5th ed

Dana Peterman comments: This is the fifth edition for this book. It looks like and feels like a textbook. There are definitions of terms, summaries at the end of each chapter, and review questions. So, this is useful for a review. Take a look at the chapters on language acquisition and the chapter, “Language, Culture, and Cognition”.

Author: Gibbons, Susan (Susan L.), 1970-
Title: The academic library and the net gen student : making the connections / Susan Gibbons
Published: Chicago : American Library Association, 200

Dana Peterman comments: Not specifically for educator/researchers, this slim volume introduces literature on student communication in chapters two and six that are quick and dirty.

Author: Schmidt, Peter, 1964 Jan. 20-
Title: Color and money : how rich White kids are winning the war over college affirmative action / Peter Schmidt
Published: New York : Palgrave Macmillan, 2007
Edition: 1st ed

Dana Peterman comments: There have been a few reviews of this work already. I leave it to you to find them. This is quite the hot topic.

Author: Harris, Suzy
Title: The governance of education : how neo-liberalism is transforming policy and practice / Suzy Harris
Published: New York, NY : Continuum International Pub. Group, 2007

Dana Peterman comments: A critique of “neo-liberalism” in education focused on the UK. Some of these claims may be applicable in the United States. Some may not. There is definitely an ideological perspective taken here.

Author: Cavanagh, Sheila L. (Sheila Lynn), 1969-
Title: Sexing the teacher : school sex scandals and queer pedagogies / Sheila L. Cavanagh
Published: Vancouver : UBC Press, c2007

Dana Peterman comments: While the perspective is mostly Canadian, students of rights, policy, and queer studies will find this of interest. Written from a sociological perspective. Contains references and notes.

Author: Dwyer, Carol Anne
Title: The future of assessment : shaping teaching and learning / edited by Carol Anne Dwyer
Published: New York : Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2008

Dana Peterman comments:

Author: Nelson, Stephen James, 1947-
Title: Leaders in the labyrinth : college presidents and the battleground of creeds and convictions / Stephen J. Nelson
Published: Westport, CT : Praeger Pub., 2007

Dana Peterman comments:

Author: Hanauer, David Ian
Title: Scientific discourse : multiliteracy in the classroom / David Ian Hanauer
Published: London ; New York : Continuum, c2006

Dana Peterman comments:

Title: Persons in context : building a science of the individual / edited by Yuichi Shoda, Daniel Cervone, Geraldine Downey
Published: New York : Guilford Press, c2007
